2006 marked the inception of Conversando a Través de la Poesía. This dynamic platform was formed to provide an inclusive sanctuary for writers spanning diverse backgrounds, genres, and age groups. Though the organization’s name emphasizes the lyrical beauty of poetry, its embrace extends warmly to novelists, short story maestros, creators of children’s literature, and writers beyond these realms. Monthly gatherings form the heart of this community, nurturing bonds, sharing insights, and embarking on a collective voyage of growth and exploration.

Illuminating New Horizons through the BANF Grant

In 2022, a transformational opportunity dawned with the BIPOC Arts, Network, and Fund (BANF) grant, igniting new possibilities for Conversando a Través de la Poesía.. With the timely guidance of Tony Diaz from Nuestra Palabra, Julie Pujol Karel embarked on the journey of applying and successfully being awarded this grant. The triumph became a recognition of their labor and an endorsement of their impactful contributions to the community.

Realizing Dreams with the Support of the BANF Grant

The BANF grant’s impact extended far for Conversando a Través de la Poesía.. It facilitated their attendance at events in San Antonio and brought a retired professor from Mexico for a transformative conference. Their “Books and Authors” program flourished, and the organization was empowered to bestow literary awards upon local writers. In Julie’s words, the $5,000 grant became the catalyst that turned dreams into reality, broke limitations, and expanded the scope of their initiatives.

Championing Inclusivity in Houston’s BIPOC Art Community
